Why does authenticity matter to sculptor Sean Henry?

Posted on May 3, 2025May 12, 2025 by Lars Carlén

Theatre and film are two important sources of inspiration for Sean Henry. To him sometimes a play can be seen as pure sculpture.

Authenticity was something he talked much about in the interview for the podcast Gentleman Lars. We discussed why autenticity is very important to him when choosing ”models” for his sculptures.
The sculpture ”Seated Figure” was inspired in part by a portrait of the author Hans Jaeger, painted by the artist Edward Munch in 1889. The portrait and the sculpture are similar in many ways. But not at all in every aspect. For instance Sean Henry changed the hat on the head of the sculpture. He talks about this sculpture in the interview.

Reactions in the cathedrals

When his sculptures were shown at Salisbury Cathedral in 2011 and then at Ely Cathedral in 2024, what were the reactions and how was it for him to have his sculptures on display there? We discussed that as well.
